Sorghum Art Assignment

ART 2310 Art, Environment, Sustainability

Due: Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Two compositions.

During class we will pin up our designs for critique, scan our artwork and upload digital scans to the conference web-site.

Assignment

TTU is hosting the global sorghum conference this September 14-18, 2026. Our first assignment will be to participate in the art contest. See reference photos below. To get started we will do a twenty minute continuous line drawing project in class together. This will be required for upload on the due date. You are also required to do an open ended composition.

Sorghum Required Reference Photo.

Sample of Composition One: Line Drawing

We digitize the sorghum photo in photoshop. Apply a “BW” mode. Apply a “find edges” filter. Print the “find edges” filer photo and trace trace with pen onto paper. 8.5x11 inches.

Sample of Composition Two: Open Ended

Sorghum Line drawing with drip painting technique.

Open ended is based on the first photo and open to concept, media, technique. You can digitize, paint, draw, sculpt, etc. You will work independently to determine media and technique. Think about what media you have and what techniques you know (ie: digital, pencil drawing, RISO printing, stippling technique, photo realistic painting, collage, cyanotype, laser cutting, etc. If you do not have any art media or artistic techniques, then build on the pen line drawing we did together.

This sample traces the required sorghum line drawing into watercolor paper and applies a drip painting technique to create a windy effect.

This sample digitally collages the required sorghum reference photo to a line drawing of a different sorghum photo to create a layered concept effect.
